Get Your Very Own Stylist, Just Like the Stars!

While in Covid lockdown, I have been missing my thrift store hauls and clothing swaps. I was really getting sick of looking at the same old clothes in my closet. I generally think $6 for a piece of clothing is expensive at the thrift store, but I figured since I’m not spending money on a garbage bag full of dresses, that I could explore a subscription clothing box service.

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. My review is 100% my true opinion.

I started with the ever-popular Stitch Fix. I had a coupon deal, so that encouraged the idea in the first place. Welp, the cheapest item was $42! NOT in my price range. You do put a $20 deposit that will apply to your order, but if you don’t keep anything, they keep your $20. I’m not about that life (I’m not just going to give away money for nothing!). Turns out, I received a couple of cute sweaters and some pants that fit perfectly. I live in leggings because I either can’t get pants pulled up over my thighs, or if I do, the gap in the waist is at least 2 inches. I decided if I had to keep 1 piece, it would be the perfect pants. They are now the most expensive pair of butt huggers I own at $78. I will not be returning to this service. I’m wearing the pants in the photos. The second service I tried was Nadine West. I looked at a lot of blogs that listed out a bunch of services, and this one only showed up on one of them. It talked about the prices being reasonable. While I was waiting for my delivery, I got a call from a number that I didn’t recognize that went to voicemail. Nadine West herself called to thank me for supporting her small business. While that was nice and all, I really don’t want to talk to Ms. West. If you like that extra special personal touch, you’ve got it here. My shipment arrived and the first thing I noticed was that the items ranged from $16.99-$32.99. I tried on each of my items (6 total), but it turns out I didn’t set up my style profile well. For example, one of the items was a flowy, very wide, comfy dress. No way…I only wear tight fitting or at least a dress that cinches at the waist. I’m going to give this one another try though now that I made updates to my profile and added notes. I’m wearing the shirt I kept in the photos below. You can get a delivery every 2 or 4 weeks. The last service, I tried 3-4 years ago…my favorite online clothing retailer, ThredUp. They are a second-hand online clothing store. I have sold items I’ve picked up from thrift and consignment stores for a total of $5,300 in the last 5 years on this site. The prices for the items I received were $13.99-$35.99 (4 items under $20). Obviously, this is more my speed. I didn’t love my box overall, but I did keep 2 items (10 came in the box). The denim jacket in the photos came from here. I added copious notes about what I didn’t like about the choices, and I’m going to try this again and I expect to have better results after they read what I have to say. The Bag Lady

by In California, you no longer hear “paper or plastic” at the grocery store. Actually, I don’t know what they say now because I’ve been bringing in my own bags for years and have them already on the conveyor belt like a good little tree hugger. I know that not everyone is a fan of having to remember to lug in their reusable bags, but I just can’t think of a good reason to not do this.

When I first met Mr. Beaverelli, he kept talking about ChicoBags this and ChicoBags that. So what? It’s a bag that tucks into itself, woopty-do. Well, he was so into them, that he bought his mother and me one for Christmas and threw it in our stockings. I started to keep it in my purse and one of my biggest obsessions was born. I now have about 12-15 that I keep in my purse, my desk at work, my gym locker, a couple in the house and several in my car. If I don’t have one on me, I actually go into a small panic. Mamarelli can’t leave home without hers and always asks for more as one of her presents. I’m also extremely protective of them and I brought some food to my former boss once and she asked if she could take my bag home. She still razzes me for my reaction…I looked at her and said, “you have to bring this back to me!” I’ve since gifted her a couple of her own and I got a text the other day telling me she understands now why I am so attached to my “Chicos“.

3-in-1 No Sew Upcycle T-Shirt (gift bag, headband and tote)!

by I’ve come to the realization that I’m not quite as satisfied unless my craft is an upcycle. It’s just not the same when you walk into Michael’s and purchase an assemble-yourself kit. I’d rather keep something out of the landfill and re-purpose it into something useful and fun.

I don’t know how to sew and I don’t have the patience to ever learn. That means my glue gun comes in handy when I’m putting together a costume, outfit…or bag!

As you probably know, 85% of my clothing comes from a thrift store (usually Team Amvets Thrift Store). Once I saw the idea of making a T-shirt tote, I had to look for some interesting designs. It then came to me…why waste trees by using wrapping paper? Or even a gift bag…I THINK most people reuse them for someone else’s gift, but they might only have a life of 3 holidays until they end up in the trash too.

What better use of an old T-shirt than making it into a gift bag for a baby shower, birthday, Christmas or even a “just because” gift? Not only is it an adorable way to present a gift, but it’s a usable gift itself! A collapsible tote to take with you to the grocery store, department store, farmer’s market, an overnight bag…the possibilities are endless. Let’s take it 1 step further and not let those scraps go to waste either. Make a headband with flower embellishments.

What you need:

A t-shirt of your choosing (the larger, the better)
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks
Extra t-shirt/t-shirt scraps for additional embellishments

Step 1: Cut above the bottom seam.

Step 2: Fold the shirt in half and cut the sleeves off.

Step 3: While still folded, cut around the neck.

It should look like this:

Step 4: Go to the base of the shirt and cut about 3 inches up with about an inch between each cut.

Step 5: Start tying the corresponding flaps to each other and double knot them.

It will look a little something like this after you finish the line…but you’re not done yet.

See this gap here? I’m sure it would be okay if you don’t put tiny items inside, but I like a nice, solid bag…

Step 6: Tie the flaps next to each other to close up those gaps. Double tie these as well.

Ta-da! This is actually acceptable as is…but not as much fun as it can be.

Step 7: Take one of the sleeves and cut into 3’s. Make sure the middle section is larger (this will be your headband)

Step 8: Make a rose out of the smaller strip.

Put a dot of glue and make a triangle at the corner.
Start to circle the fabric around the center. Run glue down the strip.
Be sure to twist the fabric to add some texture.

Look how cute these are!

Step 9: Attach your rose embellishments to the headband with the glue gun.

All done!

Right here, you have “wrapping” for a Christmas gift, a Valentine’s gift, a birthday present for the poet/child/nerd in your life.

What Is A Must-See In Every City You Visit?

The local outdoor markets, that’s what. Whether it’s an open market, farmer’s market, flea market or swap meet, it’s the place to go to find some local culture…and usually at a discount! I always find that you can learn a lot about the region by doing this. Not to mention delicious eats from pop-up vendors too. I enjoy going to the swap meets and farmer’s markets in San Diego, so why wouldn’t I want to find them in foreign lands or cities? My main focus is usually food and jewelry.

Here is a market we discovered in Florence, Italy.With plenty of tasty treats. Too bad we had just eaten and the cruise ship doesn’t let us bring food back.

The produce in Rome, Italy is simply amazing. All of the colors and freshness.

Free Grappa samples…don’t mind if I do…Our new scarves. Unfortunately, I think these were made in China.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Skip the shopping malls and get outdoors. The exception, of course, is if you’re traveling during cold winter months, you’re probably not going to find these little spots of heaven.

Don’t Throw Those Wine Bottles Away!

by Why not upcycle instead? What is upcycling, you ask? It’s taking something you’d usually just throw out, and re-purposing it into something usable and fabulous again instead.

Once a month, my creative, fun friend, Mary Katherine, hosts a girl’s crafting night at her place. She makes it desirable for even the laziest of people…she gets all the supplies and tells us what we owe her. This month: wine bottle wind chimes.

I started out with the best of intentions, but cutting glass isn’t nearly as easy as I thought it would be with the special tool we had to use, so my lazy ass decided to skimp corners instead.

What you need:

Kinkajou Bottle Cutter (or another cheaper brand: Bottle Cutter Kit – I have not tried this brand, so I cannot endorse it…but I’m all about cheap! The Kink belonged to my friend)
A glass bottle of your choice
Ribbon
Guinea fowl feathers
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks

This is the Kinkajou…get your mind out of the gutter and follow along here…

Here’s how it works:

Easy, right? Wrong. Okay, when it works, it’s wonderful, but it can be tough to get it perfect. Tips for getting a clean cut:

Choose a bottle with thin glass. How do you know if it’s thin or not? I’m not sure, but the Pellegrino water bottles worked nicely (and they’re a pretty green).
Make sure the cut goes all the way around in a straight line and connects at its ends.

I only cut 1 bottle after 2 of my friends had failed, uneven cuts. Mine just snapped right off where it was supposed to. That’s it, I give up, 1 bottle it is. I made it into a wind chime at first (I’ll show you how to do that below), but ultimately decided on the candle holder instead.

My bag of ribbons is sorry, so this golden mustard color was the only decent choice. Cut about 18 inches of ribbon (you can always cut it down more).

Tie the ribbon around the bottleneck into a bow and play with it until you get it to your desired bow size. Then, cut off any excess ribbon.Pull the bow up over the top of your bottle and get out your glue gun. Add some glue around the bottleneck where you will secure your ribbon back.Add some glue to the middle, inside of the bow so that you can slip your feathers into it.

All done!

As for the windchime, Mr. Beaverelli doesn’t like noises, so this was a no-go for this lodge. I used 3 of these large plastic pearl beads (these came from an old necklace that Mary Katherine acquired, I might add).You have to play around with different ways of tying the beads and how much distance between them. Pulling the cord through the bottle is the best way to eyeball it and then make adjustments accordingly.

She also throws away the key fobs and keeps just the key ring (she’s my hero). You’d think that this old icky thing is not something you’d ever want to keep around, but I like it way more than the shiny, new looking ones.

If only the windchime didn’t make noise…wait? Huh?

You could even use it as both! Try out on the mantle for a while and when you’re tired of looking at it and would rather hear it instead (and let your neighbors have a nice view) put it outside.

Really REALLY Free Market

by Really, honestly, truthfully…everything’s free! What a wonderful concept! Why half of San Diego wasn’t at the San Diego Really Really Free Market is beyond me. I still can’t decide whether I was more excited to get rid of things and provide someone with my old “treasures”, or acquiring my own special finds.

I dragged Mr. Beaverelli into this adventure too. “Honey, let’s clean out the ENTIRE house, k?” We didn’t quite make it through every inch of our place, but we’ll be sure to get it done before the next one in June. We donate a lot of stuff to thrift stores (mostly Amvets and Goodwill) and while doing taxes this year, we discovered that a lot of the odd items can’t be written off. Well heck, I’d rather give it away to someone free. There are also items, like food, that you can’t really donate to a thrift store. They had a food drive going too! How about those half used lotions and body washes? The kind you realize kind of stink…someone’s going to want your old crap, I can assure you. The most beautiful part was when Mr. B cleaned out the messy one car garage. There were full paint cans that he used before he moved into our place 10 years ago and a roll of linoleum that just hung out in a corner for 10+ years…ALL GONE!

Here’s some of the old stuff we got rid of. After being there for about 2 hours, 90% of our stuff was snatched up. I know it looks like a big, giant mess, but let’s be real, I wasn’t selling this stuff. If I were to take the time to put everything out nicely, other people were going to take off with the stuff that I was about to throw into my own bag.

Beaverelli’s finds! What a lot of fun finds: a corset that made my tiny beaver bumps look like a boy’s chest, a biker babe top, new plates, greeting cards, scrap book paper for my auntie, and shoes my size (I have tiny hind paws)!

Why not pick a day, go to a park (check to see if you need a permit) and advertise to all of your friends. Start with social media, put an ad on Craigslist, start a blog…endless possibilities!
